EAGLE PASS, Texas -- A Salvadoran woman who made local headlines earlier this week after giving birth in a restroom at the International Bridge 1 of Eagle Pass was discharged from the local hospital Thursday morning.

Marcela Ayala, 34, said she and her healthy baby girl, Ruby Ayala, are extremely grateful to the community and the great number of residents who paid them a visit while at the Fort Duncan Regional Medical Center. They received numerous gifts and well wishes from locals who heard the news earlier this week, Ayala said.

Upon being discharged, the mother and daughter were transported to a nearby refugee shelter where they'll remain until her immigration issues are resolved, FDRMC Marketing Director Lourdes Perez said Thursday morning.

Ayala made the news on Tuesday, Oct. 24, after giving birth in a women's restroom while requesting asylum at the Eagle Pass Port of Entry CBP offices. Her request for asylum was based on "being in danger" at her country of origin, according to different sources.
