EAGLE PASS - A Maverick County Sheriff's Deputy was arrested Saturday morning after Police say he fired an M-4 rifle into the air while being heavily intoxicated.

Gabriel Serrano, 40s, was arrested and charged with reckless discharge of a gun, according to the police report.

The incident happened at around 2 a.m. outside 1800 Bar located at 404 S. Bibb Ave.

In a brief phone interview Saturday afternoon, Sheriff Tom Schmerber said he was aware of the incident, and planned to take immediate action.

"I will not tolerate this type of behavior from anyone on my department, especially if it involves the safety and well-being of the community," Schmerber said.

Serrano, who had been employed as a full-time deputy officer at the sheriff's office for only one year, is expected to be fired.

No reports of injuries or damage to property were reported following the incident.
