December 8, 2017

EAGLE PASS, Maverick County -- An undocumented immigrant from Mexico died Thursday afternoon from apparent physical exhaustion after walking through the woods for more than 14 hours. He, his wife and his brother-in-law were headed to San Antonio.

According to the sheriff's office, the trio was walking through a wooded area near the U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint on Highway 57 when the 28-year-old man collapsed and lost consciousness.

His wife, who was carrying a mobile phone with her, dialed 9-1-1 and requested assistance, but paramedics and law enforcement offices took nearly two hours to find their location.

The man was dead by the time help arrived, the sheriff's office said. A justice of the peace pronounced the man deceased shortly after.

His body was taken to a local funeral home, and his case was referred to the local Mexican Consulate office.
