EAGLE PASS, Maverick County, Texas -- Maverick County Sheriff Tom Schmerber is advising residents against the dangers of shooting off guns to celebrate the New Year, and warned of criminal charges against those who do.
In a telephone interview Sunday afternoon, Schmerber said the sheriff's office will criminally charge anyone who is caught firing a gun on New Year's Eve.
"It's a reckless and senseless act," Schmerber said. "Those same bullets will eventually come down and may injure or kill someone, including innocent children."
The sheriff said his deputies will be working diligently to ensure the community's safety.
Anyone who sees someone shooting in celebration are asked to call 911 and report it.
