Woman dies after shootout with sheriff's deputy

REAL COUNTY, Texas -- A 31-year-old woman was killed by a Real County Sheriff's Department deputy after she allegedly shot at his direction during a domestic disturbance.

According to the sheriff's office in that county, deputy Johnathan Ortiz was dispatched to a hotel for a report of a domestic dispute involving a child.

When Ortiz arrived, Muzquiz obtained a firearm from her vehicle and fired one round at his direction.

The deputy, fearing for his life, fired back, severely injuring the woman.

Paramedics quickly transported Muzquiz to Uvalde Memorial Hospital where she later died.

Real County is a small county about 50 miles north of Uvalde.

The case remains under investigation.
