EPISD investigating possible online security breach after fake email is sent to teachers, staff

January 25, 2018

EAGLE PASS, Maverick County, Texas -- The Eagle Pass Independent School District is investigating a possible security breach to one or more of their online servers after a "hoax" email message was sent out early Thursday morning to all teachers and staff members.

According to the information provided by EPISD officials, "hackers" impersonated Deputy Superintendent Samuel Mijares to address the current rumors that EPISD administrators would receive a pay raise.

The perpetrators also attached a pdf file containing all the administrators' current salaries and proposed pay raises.

EPISD officials said the case is under investigation to find out who sent it.

A copy of the email message was sent to EPTXN:

"Good morning.  As your future Superintendent I feel compelled to share something which will clear up a lot of misguided information.  I often hear, "Why did administrators get such a big raise and not the teachers?".  Just so you know, we did not.  My brother and I are making a measly $125K / year.  We can barely put food on the table for our families with that salary.  Anyhow, enough with the griping.  Attached is our most recent adjustments and salaries (all of which are freely available by request). Now, on to greater things.  "WE WILL MAKE THIS DISTRICT GREAT AGAIN!"...catchy motto huh?  Go forward and do great things.

-Sam Mijares"
