AUSTIN, TEXAS.— The first woman took command of the Texas Military Department on Saturday.
Governor Greg Abbott appointed Adjutant General Tracy Norris earlier this year but she was formally honored a change of command ceremony.
Major General John F. Nichols relinquished command to Major General Norris.
"The Gov. of Texas has always been selected," Norris said. "We've been very fortunate to have Adjutant General's through our history that are very qualified and lead the organization to the next level, and I just appreciate that they saw that in me."
She has been serving for more than 30 years.
